REINDEER FUN RUN
News Release
SOUTHERN PINES, NC – Attracting serious runners to recreational walkers, families and pets, the Reindeer Fun Run, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills, annually brings community spirit to downtown Southern Pines. As part of the new Sandhills Race Series, this year’s 4th annual charitable event held on December 4, 2010 attracted over 1,950 participants, becoming the largest running event in the area.
“The Reindeer Fun Run has quickly grown to be more than a race. It’s become a holiday tradition that brings our community together to celebrate the season and generate funds for a worthy cause ” said Kate Petsolt, Founder and Director of the annual 5K, 10K and ½ mile Egg Nog Jog, “One hundred percent of proceeds from our event are donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills to help provide a safe place for our local youth to learn and grow. This year, due to an increase in both sponsorships and participants, I am proud to announce that the Reindeer Fun Run is able to make a record donation of $23,000.”

The Cause - The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills
In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.
Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. They are truly The Positive Place for Kids.

From games and athletics to drug prevention workshops, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills offers young people a range of fun and productive activities. Clubs are open each day after school from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. – when research has shown children to be most vulnerable to gangs, violence and other risky behaviors. In the summer, Clubs and special summer-only sites open their doors all day to young people with nowhere else to go.
A trained, caring staff implements proven youth development strategies and creates a stable, supportive environment for children and teens ages six to 18. Specially designed programs concentrate on developing job readiness, study skills, leadership, self-esteem, good health and social responsibility among Boys & Girls Club members.
- In 2009 & 2010, every $1 of corporate sponsorship resulted in a $2 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills.
The Reindeer Fun Run has donated $50,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills & is the Club’s single largest fundraiser.
About the Reindeer Fun Run
History of the Reindeer Fun Run
“It all started because of what we awoke to see and hear on a chilly December morning back in 2006. We were in Charleston for a visit and stumbled upon their Reindeer Run. We saw joggers dressed as Christmas presents, kids dressed like Santa, dogs dressed like elves, and more people in antlers than you could imagine. What was all this craziness? As we talked to spectators along the route we learned that this was their Reindeer Run! My husband and I looked at each other and realized at that moment we shared the very same thought – this needs to happen in our community! And that’s how it began.
We reached out to Trident Marketing who agreed to be our “Jolly Old Saint Nick” sponsor so we could begin our event. We knew the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills needed all the support they could get and determined that they would be the charity we support. We continue to do so this year with hopes of exceeding last year’s donation of $23,000. Neither my husband nor I were runners and we had a lot to learn. We formed a committee of amazing folks and worked for months and months to learn about organizing a race. We set a lofty goal of 400 runners for our first year and hit the mark. In 2008 we grew to over 600 and in 2009 we hit nearly 900 participants. Last year we added a 10k in hopes of reaching even more runners. It worked and we became the county’s largest race with nearly 2000 participants! The community support is amazing. And all because of the hard work of the folks in Charleston and what we saw that day. Their event inspired us to act. So, every year beginning in January, we begin the hard work and planning for the next year. With nearly 150 volunteers, it’s best if we get a jump start. In this our 5th year, we’ve moved our race just down the road to Aberdeen. They have welcomed us with open arms and community and business leaders have been very helpful and thoughtful in how we can surpass even the loftiest of goals.”
