SOUTHERN PINES, NC – Attracting serious runners to recreational walkers, families and pets, the Reindeer Fun Run, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills, annually brings community spirit to downtown Southern Pines. As part of the new Sandhills Race Series, this year’s 4th annual charitable event held on December 4, 2010 attracted over 1,950 participants, becoming the largest running event in the area.

“The Reindeer Fun Run has quickly grown to be more than a race. It’s become a holiday tradition that brings our community together to celebrate the season and generate funds for a worthy cause ” said Kate Petsolt, Founder and Director of the annual 5K, 10K and ½ mile Egg Nog Jog, “One hundred percent of proceeds from our event are donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills to help provide a safe place for our local youth to learn and grow. This year, due to an increase in both sponsorships and participants, I am proud to announce that the Reindeer Fun Run is able to make a record donation of $23,000.”

Retail Shops and Restaurants in Southern Pines

One of the great results we have seen from our Reindeer Fun Runners Survey is the positive economic impact the event has on Southern Pines. 51% of all responders said they stayed in Southern Pines after the event to shop and dine. With almost 2,000 runners + 1,000 fans, that’s a lot of people, and a great thing for the merchants of Southern Pines.

Runners from everywhere…
Many of our runners were from out of town this year. The 2010 event drew runners from 112 different cities in North Carolina, and 14 different states. We fielded calls on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do after the race. It’s exciting to be able to introduce so many people to what we love about Southern Pines!

We would like to thank everyone at the Southern Pines Police Department for all of their work to help the event go off without a hitch (okay, just a couple hitches – but the police were great!). Specifically, Bob Temme for coordinating with us on the routes, the closed roads and everything else to ensure runner safety. It is a big coordinating effort with the Reindeer Fun Run, followed by the Southern Pines Christmas Parade, and we thank all of the police that are there on that day helping out.

Those kids were primed and ready, and they took off fast. It was a little more crowded than we intended, but it sure was fun seeing the whole herd running together. Hopefully they all had a great time!

The 2010 Reindeer Fun Run has just passed our 2009 total for runners – and there is another week to register! Awesome! We want every year to be better than the year before, and we are excited to show off everything we have done to make that true again this year.

It is going to take 150 volunteers to put on the event this year. ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY! Crazy. Traffic control, set-up, registration, food & beverage stands, the huge Chick-fil-A Kids Zone, the After Party, and a few surprises along the way.

This event is all about FUN – and we plan on having lots of it next Saturday. We are excited to share that with all of you!

Early registrations have been flying in – and we’re excited! This will be the biggest Reindeer Fun Run yet, with every level of runner and walker well represented. The finale to the Sandhills Race Series first season and the new 10k is bringing out the serious runners, and the costumes, fantastic live music, food, fun and games are there for folks just looking for a good time and some exercise. The Chick-fil-A Egg Nog Jog and Kids Zone is also adding some serious fun to the event, with Pony Rides, Santa, obstacle course, along with the crowd favorite 1/2 mile kid’s run making it a great day for the whole family. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there – and remember, 100% of proceeds go to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills!

Part of the great Charlottesville music scene, Peyton Tochterman and High Society were such a hit when they played First Friday that they were eager to return to Southern Pines for another show. We can’t wait to welcome them!

This year, run the 5k or 10k on December 3rd in downtown Aberdeen, and come see the Annual Christmas Parade in downtown Aberdeen on December 10th at 3:00 p.m. Two great holiday traditions!

2010: The annual Southern Pines Christmas Parade will be following the Reindeer Fun Run and After Party in the Downtown Southern Pines Park. The parade will begin at 1:30 – and it will easy to know where to be. Just look for the crowd – many of them in their new Reindeer Fun Run shirts and antlers!

Chronotrack is a disposable “chip” that attaches to your shoe and will be adhered to the race bib of those signing up to be timed. This will save time the morning of the race since you will already have your timing device. You can watch a video about Chronotrack here to learn more.

But one request we keep getting is the addition of a 10k event. Well, we’re giving it a try! We will be coordinating with the town of Southern Pines, the USATF, the Southern Pines Police and Parks & Recreation to make it all happen. We will keep you posted!

Online registration will begin the first week of August, with the launch of an improved website. Keep checking back for more info, and make sure to become a fan of the Reindeer Fun Run on Facebook.
