Boys & Girls Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. They are truly The Positive Place for Kids.

As part of these programs, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills provided 23,484 meals in Southern Pines and 10,496 snacks in Aberdeen, serving nearly 2,000 members and community youth.

From games and athletics to drug prevention workshops, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills offers young people a range of fun and productive activities. Clubs are open each day after school from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – when research has shown children to be most vulnerable to gangs, violence and other risky behaviors. In the summer, Clubs and special summer-only sites open their doors all day to young people with nowhere else to go.

To see Poplar street totally disappear as far as the eye could see with runners & walkers, adults & kids, pets & costumes was absolutely fantastic!

Town of AberdeenWe also want to send a special thank you to the Town of Aberdeen for hosting the Reindeer Fun Run. To pull of a fifth year event in a first year location is a huge task. To add the level of support offered by Aberdeen is inspirational. Police, Fire, Planning, Parks & Recreation and Public Works were all involved for nearly six months to make sure that the event was safe, organized, and of course, fun! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Race organizers are catching their breath, but will be posting photos and more information about the event as quickly as possible. For those who were timed, you can check your results here.

The event for all of North Carolina keeps getting bigger and keeps getting better! The 5k curves through the historic downtown neighborhoods of Aberdeen, NC with rolling hills and wide turns. The 10k incorporates the 5k route along with a scenic tour of Bethesda, and the Malcolm Blue Farm. Both courses finish on a sloping downhill toward downtown Aberdeen and historic Union Station.

This FUN community event is for everyone from serious runners to recreational walkers, families, and pets. Join in the holiday cheer with a run or walk and the Reindeer Fun Run After Party featuring a Kids Zone and new Adult Zone.

We encourage you to set a fitness goal for yourself, and a “Fun”raising goal that you can share with your family, friends and co-workers. We have set a lofty goal of raising an additional $15,000 for this great local cause, and along with all of the kids from the clubs, we thank you for your generosity.

In the fall it was AutumnFest (Southern Pines), Miles for Mira (Southern Pines), Turkey Trot (Pinehurst) and the Reindeer Fun Run (Southern Pines, now Aberdeen) that all set records.  This spring, ShamRock ‘N Roll (Whispering Pines), Run for the Ribbons (Raeford), Disabled American Veterans 5k (Carthage) and MANNA! In Motion (Southern Pines) did the same!  Wow, wow wow!

The Spring Series will be announced at the Champions’ Award Ceremony at Mellow Mushroom on June 25th, and will expand the SRS even more with bigger, better events raising even more money for their causes.

So far 3,341 people have participated in the Sandhills Race Series, running nearly 25,000 kilometers.  Not a bad first year.  Congratulations to all the runners & walkers who participated in the Sandhills Race Series this year.

As many of you know, we were not able to keep our date/time/location in Southern Pines for the 5th Annual Reindeer Fun Run. But we couldn’t be happier with where the 2011 event will be.  Here are just a few of the things we are really excited about…

Route
Both the 5k & 10k are fantastic with rolling hills and beautiful views. Our favorite is the long downhill finish into downtown Aberdeen.

Safety
The Aberdeen Police and Fire Departments have volunteered to station themselves at nearly every single street crossing.  We’re hoping we can get them all to wear antlers!

Town Participation
The Town of Aberdeen is a full sponsor and actively participating in all aspects of the event, from parking and packet pick-up, to the After Party.

Tailgating/Sponsor Tents
We’re working on it!

After Party
With the ability to have streets closed, the Kids Zone can be even bigger.  And for the grown-ups, look forward to a new Adult Zone too!

Weather
If it is cold outside before or after the race, look for the Aberdeen Merchants Guild hospitality tents to help keep you warm.
