The Reindeer Fun Run is a very special race for me. Not only is it the most fun race ever, but it commemorates the last normal day I had with my mother before she passed away on December 22, 2007.

It was the first year of the run, held in Southern Pines. I knew mom didn’t have much time left. The doctor gave her six weeks to live. We had made a pack some years earlier to travel by faith. When we first discovered she had a terminal heart condition and was given only six months to live, I told her point blank, “I am going to help you run all the way to the finish line. Whatever it takes. Whatever the cost. I am by your side.” I didn’t realize six months would turn into almost seven years.

As a life-coach, I wanted to give her a strong finish to her race, so at 85, I taught her how to play golf, helped her start a house-cleaning business at 88, when she also had her first paid modeling shoot. At 89, she started public speaking. At 90, it was … continue

Joyner-Kersey’s visit to Southern Pines is part of a benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills, who remains a valuable partner of the Reindeer Fun Run. She will speak at Pinecrest High School’s Robert E. Lee auditorium at 7PM on September 24th.

During her career, Joyner-Kersey competed in four Summer Olympics (1984, 1988, 1992, 1996), earning three gold, one silver, and two bronze Olympic medals in the women’s heptathlon and long jump. Despite retiring from athletics in 2000, Joyner-Kersey still maintains the heptathlon world record in points scored, which she earned at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. She now serves on the board of the USA Track & Field organization, a position she has held since 2012.

Tickets to see Joyner-Kersee speak are $20 for adults and $10 for students.

Possibly getting ready for the Blessing of the Hounds on Thanksgiving morning, the reindeer is now accompanied by his gingerbread rider.  While gingerbread men are know to run, run as fast as they can, this cool cookie appears to be taking it easy while waiting for the hunt to begin. Speculation surrounding the pair is that they are making their way to the 7th Annual Reindeer Fun Run on Saturday, December 7 in Aberdeen, NC.  If you happen to spot the reindeer around the area, please let us know.

Hey runners!  How about a little biking to keep those legs fresh!

Our friends at the Sandhills Cycling Club are proud to host the 23rd Annual Tour de Moore Classic to benefit the Moore County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

While you may not be able to ride the Tour de France, you can enjoy a fully-supported, hilly, challenging and fun ride around beautiful Moore County in the heart of the Sandhills. Riders from all over North Carolina and neighboring States look forward to this annual bike festival.

In 2012, three ride distances will be offered: a 28 mile cruise, a 50 mile ramble, and the Classic TdM Century…100 miles showcasing the best of Moore County cycling! Following the rides, the Tour de Moore Classic will have plenty of entertainment for the entire family including music by Tony Barnes and food provided by Elliott’s on Linden.

The Annual Christmas Parade will be held on  December 10th at 3:00 p.m. in Historic Downtown Aberdeen.  The Parade is part of Christmas in Aberdeen: A Hometown Holiday Tradition and will include floats, bands, clowns, antique cars, Beauty Queens, scouts, and Santa.

Come on out for a great time and a fun event promoting local shopping, dining, and good times.

Every year we donate 100% of the proceeds of the Reindeer Fun Run to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills. Together with you, this year we want to do even more! We encourage you to set a fitness goal for yourself, and a “Fun”raising goal that you can share with your family, friends and co-workers. The Spring Series will be announced at the Champions’ Award Ceremony at Mellow Mushroom on June 25th, and will expand the SRS even more with bigger, better events raising even more money for their causes.

So far 3,341 people have participated in the Sandhills Race Series, running nearly 25,000 kilometers.  Not a bad first year.  Congratulations to all the runners & walkers who participated in the Sandhills Race Series this year.

SOUTHERN PINES, NC – Attracting serious runners to recreational walkers, families and pets, the Reindeer Fun Run, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills, annually brings community spirit to downtown Southern Pines. As part of the new Sandhills Race Series, this year’s 4th annual charitable event held on December 4, 2010 attracted over 1,950 participants, becoming the largest running event in the area.

“The Reindeer Fun Run has quickly grown to be more than a race. It’s become a holiday tradition that brings our community together to celebrate the season and generate funds for a worthy cause ” said Kate Petsolt, Founder and Director of the annual 5K, 10K and ½ mile Egg Nog Jog, “One hundred percent of proceeds from our event are donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills to help provide a safe place for our local youth to learn and grow. This year, due to an increase in both sponsorships and participants, I am proud to announce that the Reindeer Fun Run is able to make a record donation of $23,000.”

For those that will miss the parade following our event, check out the Aberdeen parade, one of the longest running in the area, on December 10th at 3:00 p.m.  Come and see local floats, local bands, and local flavor, and stay downtown to shop and dine and discover what Aberdeen has to offer.

Runners from everywhere…
Many of our runners were from out of town this year.  The 2010 event drew runners from 112 different cities in North Carolina, and 14 different states.  We fielded calls on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do after the race.  It’s exciting to be able to introduce so many people to what we love about Southern Pines!
