Hanging up our antlers…

Fifteen years ago, we were a young couple with a starter home in Southern Pines, a toddler taking her first steps, and an idea. We’d seen the fun and festivity of the Charleston Reindeer Run, and we wanted to bring it home to our town. The generous folks at Trident Marketing agreed to help us turn our vision into a reality, our friends and family stepped up to volunteer, and in 2007 we kicked off a small local race with about 400 runners. We raised $2500 for the Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills. We were hooked. 

Fast forward to today, where we’re writing to you from our temporary home in Barcelona, Spain. We’ve got two teenagers (that toddler from 2007 is looking at colleges these days!), new businesses, and big plans for adventures and accomplishments in the next chapters of our lives. Since 1997 The Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills has been serving youth ages 5-18 with critical programming and support. In 23 years, it has become the leading youth advocacy nonprofit organization in Moore County, and has served over 6,000 childrens and teens. 

Keeping things fun and productive

Games, athletics, academic support, and drug prevention workshops form the backbone of the Club’s programming. Three locations around Moore County aim to fill the critical after-school gap—2:30 to 6:30—when research shows that children are most vulnerable to gangs, violence, and other risky behaviors. The highly trained staff implements programs to develop study skills, job readiness, self-esteem, healthy living, and social responsibility. During the summer, the Club’s locations are open all day to young people who need a place to go. 

Pivoting in a pandemic to provide services where they are most needed

43% of Moore County students receive food at school through the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Program. When COVID-19 closed schools in March, the Boys and Girls Club knew they could mobilize their resources and infrastructure to keep kids nourished. David and Kate Petsolt accepted the CARE (Children Are Reason for Excellence) Award from the NC Area Council on behalf of our entire committee and team of volunteers. We were so honored to be recognized. We are so proud of the work our crew does to put on the race each year and happy to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills. As the year draws to a close, we at the Reindeer Fun Run want to take the time to thank you for everything you did to make the 7th annual Reindeer Fun Run possible.  Runners from all over the Sandhills and beyond say the RFR is their favorite race and comment on how organized and fun the event is, and each year the number of registrants grows.  All of this would not be possible if it weren’t for you, our volunteers, who gave time, energy, and effort every step of the way.  Thank you for being there from start to finish and way after the last runners finished their cool downs, you all are fantastic!  Special thanks goes out to the following:

Jae Kim and the Police, Fire, and Public Works Department for the Town of Aberdeen – this crew helped get the town of Aberdeen ready for the Reindeer Fun Run and helped to ensure runner safety

Every year we donate 100% of the proceeds of the Reindeer Fun Run to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills. Together with you, this year we want to do even more! We encourage you to set a fitness goal for yourself, and a “Fun”raising goal that you can share with your family, friends and co-workers. We have set a lofty goal of raising an additional $15,000 for this great local cause, and along with all of the kids from the clubs, we thank you for your generosity.

In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.

One of our favorite bands is playing at Pinehurst Live After 5 on Thursday, July 21st.  And the charity for this weeks event is our favorite one, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills.  Check out a great band, at a great event, all for a great cause!

Pinehurst Live after 5 is in the Village with live music from 5-9 pm on the third Thursday of the month.  Proceeds from the events go to different organizations each week.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase on site.
