“Our community stepped up last year to help us, in partnership with Moore County Schools, provide over 200,000 meals to children and their families during the school closures. Thank you! Our youth still need your help, especially now. The curious kindergartener. The 10-year old girl with a gift for math. Teens worried about college, a career, or the state of the world.”

We were so happy to hear form 1SG William Lunceford who, despite being stationed in Kuwait, wanted to run the 12ks of Christmas this year. So… he did! William reached out to us, and we coordinated with him for an official result. Here is a note from William after his run this morning…

“I ran the 12k @ 0600 this morning (7th Dec). I know that I would not not be anywhere near the quickest person in the race there but I was the quickest and only one running here. I was very happy with my time.”

William will also earn a special Dasher Award, which is awarded to the first antlers to cross the finish line. at 0600 Kuwaiti time, he very much earned that honor. William, your shirt and medals are on the way!

1) Your Daily Training Diet

You’ve committed to running a 5K or 12K, and you’ve got your training plan in place. But how much attention have you given to your nutrition? Can you run a race on Cheetos or french fries? Probably. But you won’t perform as well, and you definitely won’t feel as good as if you had followed a good training diet. If you need specific help getting started, visit our nutrition page http://www.firsthealth.org/fitness/Pinehurst/nutrition.asp for upcoming classes and my contact information.

Make a point to fuel your body well on a daily basis to get the most out of your training.

1. Eat at least three kinds of wholesome foods at each meal
2. Eat two kinds of wholesome foods at each snack
3. Eat even-sized meals throughout the day, as opposed to a small breakfast and a belly-stuffing meal at the end of the day
4. Choose to eat at least 90% quality foods
5. Choose a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables each day: red grapes, leafy greens, yellow peppers, orange carrots, blueberries, etc. to get a variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support your immune system and help with recovery after training.

Since the event is getting so big, we need more space at both the start and finish lines for crowds to set up, watch and cheer. To accomplish this, we’ve made a small course change that adds a cool run along the tracks on Fayetteville and Blue streets. This in turn allows us to push the starting line forward to the corner of Main Street, and pull the Finish line back just a bit to Exchange.

We will now have a much more room, be further from any railroad tracks, and incorporate more of Aberdeen’s beautiful Main Street. In addition, we are moving the water stations to reduce congestion (especially where 12k & 5k combine). These are small, but impactful changes–we hope you like them!

We also have a cool idea for the Egg Nog Jog, but we’re not quite ready to share that one yet :-)

This past Saturday, the Aberdeen Reindeer fun run was my first official 5K run with my prosthetic hip. I am 54 years old and previously was an avid runner before my hip joint was destroyed by degenerative joint disease (arthritis). My time this year, of course, was way off of my previous PR’s, but I was happier to complete this 5K than any previous. 

My family was there to support me. My husband, Jeff Needham placed first in men’s 50 -59 age group, my daughter Heather Weeks placed 2nd in women’s 30 – 39, and my grandson Corbin Weeks was first in ten and under. My sister also walked the 5K with her Goldendoodles:) 

I didn’t place in my age group but last year I walked the fun run (being six weeks post-op), and this year I ran every step! This is our new family Christmas tradition. Thank you Aberdeen Reindeer Fun Run. 

My daughter, Heather is a teacher at O’Neal and my Grandson is a student there. We were happy to support the race.

When 12kers merge with the 5k course, many of them run into a wall of walkers. We try to make sure everyone is aware, we mark the route with signs, and remind everyone at the starting line. But, sometimes people are just having too much fun and forget that quick runners may be coming up behind them. So, this year we’ve decided to lessen the impact by leaving a bigger gap between the races. This should mean that the quicker 12k runners will get through before 5k walkers arrive at the merge. We hope this helps and thank everyone for their feedback!
