1) Your Daily Training Diet

You’ve committed to running a 5K or 12K, and you’ve got your training plan in place. But how much attention have you given to your nutrition? Can you run a race on Cheetos or french fries? Probably. But you won’t perform as well, and you definitely won’t feel as good as if you had followed a good training diet. If you need specific help getting started, visit our nutrition page http://www.firsthealth.org/fitness/Pinehurst/nutrition.asp for upcoming classes and my contact information.

Make a point to fuel your body well on a daily basis to get the most out of your training.

1. Eat at least three kinds of wholesome foods at each meal
2. Eat two kinds of wholesome foods at each snack
3. Eat even-sized meals throughout the day, as opposed to a small breakfast and a belly-stuffing meal at the end of the day
4. Choose to eat at least 90% quality foods
5. Choose a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables each day: red grapes, leafy greens, yellow peppers, orange carrots, blueberries, etc. to get a variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support your immune system and help with recovery after training.

Since the event is getting so big, we need more space at both the start and finish lines for crowds to set up, watch and cheer. To accomplish this, we’ve made a small course change that adds a cool run along the tracks on Fayetteville and Blue streets. This in turn allows us to push the starting line forward to the corner of Main Street, and pull the Finish line back just a bit to Exchange.

We will now have a much more room, be further from any railroad tracks, and incorporate more of Aberdeen’s beautiful Main Street. In addition, we are moving the water stations to reduce congestion (especially where 12k & 5k combine). These are small, but impactful changes–we hope you like them!

We also have a cool idea for the Egg Nog Jog, but we’re not quite ready to share that one yet :-)

As the year draws to a close, we at the Reindeer Fun Run want to take the time to thank you for everything you did to make the 7th annual Reindeer Fun Run possible.  Runners from all over the Sandhills and beyond say the RFR is their favorite race and comment on how organized and fun the event is, and each year the number of registrants grows.  All of this would not be possible if it weren’t for you, our volunteers, who gave time, energy, and effort every step of the way.  Thank you for being there from start to finish and way after the last runners finished their cool downs, you all are fantastic!  Special thanks goes out to the following:

Jae Kim and the Police, Fire, and Public Works Department for the Town of Aberdeen – this crew helped get the town of Aberdeen ready for the Reindeer Fun Run and helped to ensure runner safety

Packet Pick-up
Packet pick-up starts Friday at noon.  Your best bet is to let the first rush get through and come between 1:00 and 8:00 (please don’t come early, we won’t be ready).  This year we have moved packet pick-up to Page Memorial Fellowship Hall which is right at the starting line on 104 South Poplar Street.  We will also be collecting Cans & Coats for K2 Solutions Annual Drive at packet-pickup.  Please bring what you can.

Parking
On race day, there is lots of parking in downtown Aberdeen, but please remember if you park inside of the race route, you will not be able to leave until the last runners are off the course.  There is plenty of parking outside the route and a parking map below.

On-Site Child Care
Rugg Rats will be on-site at Page Memorial Nursery for child care.  Now, both parents can run!  Space is limited, please contact Rugg Rats to make an appointment.

Pets & Strollers
We love runners with strollers and runners with pets, but we do ask that both start behind runners without.

• 12ks of Christmas:  Set your PR for a 12k on our expanded longer course (anyone want to write the song?).
• Performance shirts: Long sleeve performance shirts are now available for the 5k & 12k.
• Race start: Last year was BEAUTIFUL, but it is December after all so we’re starting just a bit later so it is more likely to be warmer.
• Waves: Instead of starting in waves, we will ask pets and those with strollers to please start behind others to avoid congestion at the start.  On a side note, we would like spectators to do “the wave.”
• Markings: Course marking will be improved with separate lanes when the 5k & 12k come back together so runners don’t have to dodge walkers.
• Egg Nog Jog: Nothing really new here, but it’s adorable, right?!
• Goal: Our goal is to provide enough funds for the Buys & Girls Clubs of the Sandhills to keep their Aberdeen facility open year-round (just like the one in Southern Pines).
